Course objective:

The basic aim is to familiarise students with the theoretical knowledge and skills of psychophysiology of work applicable in contemporary working practice. Within this framework, the students will learn about the procedures of professional orientation and selection, personnel training, fundamentals of human resources management, the procedure of workplace analysis, individual, environmental and organisational factors contributing to work efficiency.

Course contents:

Introduction - definition of psychophysiology of work and organisational psychology (description of the field, historical development and relation with other disciplines). Working environment and work behaviour, man-machine interaction. Work analysis and job classification. Cognitive abilities and personality traits in relation to work behaviour. Selection and allocation of workers to jobs. Training and development - identification of training needs. Motivation - theoretical models of motivation. Evaluation and monitoring of employee efficiency and the performance of tasks - measurement of work performance. Behaviours associated with productivity. Stress, fatigue, work in shifts. Physical environment - noise, lighting and temperature. Management, supervision and leadership. Definitions and theories of management. Attitudes towards the organisation and work, job satisfaction, organisational affiliation, decision making in the organisation. Organisational climate and culture. Communication within the team and among teams. Cohesiveness, norms and objectives of a working group. Teamwork: characteristics of a successful team. Human error - types and theories. Workplace hazards, measures and procedures for the prevention of work-related accidents and injuries.


Knowledge of the fundamental psychophysiology of work and influence of the human factor on the productivity and quality of work. Competence for participating in the selection of new employees. Knowledge of the methods of monitoring workplace efficiency. Knowledge of procedures for the prevention of accidents and other harmful effects of work.

Learning outcomes:

Having passed the exam, the student will be able to: 1. Describe main areas in the psychology of work and its development; 2. Describe main physiological and psychological processes during work; 3. Explain the significance of personality traits, competences, knowledge and skills of the humans for work – the human factor; 4. Analyse a job using a workplace analysis method and analyse workplace hazards; 5. Recognise the need for organisational changes in compliance with contemporary working processes and conditions. These learning outcomes contribute to the following outcomes of the study programme of aircraft maintenance: - Apply the concept of a quality system in an airline company or an aircraft maintenance organisation. - Distinguish single parts of an aircraft in relation to the physical laws of flying and functioning of aircraft systems. - Describe professional and ethical responsibility of the human factor in aircraft maintenance. - Present one's own attitudes, solutions and projects through seminar papers, development of projects and the final paper.
