Hydraulics and Pneumatics

Acquiring fundamental knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics, and introduction to basic hydraulic components applied in mobile technical systems.
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Hydraulic pumps, models and classification, hydraulic pump regulation, hydraulic engines, hydraulic cylinders. Driving mechanisms, damping elements, hydraulic distributors, pressure and flow control valves, proportional valves and distributors, hydraulic servo systems. Basic hydraulic drives with open and closed recirculation, and their control. Energy calculation of mobile hydraulics. Physical and chemical properties of hydraulic oil, maintaining its purity. Sealing of movable and fixed elements. Hydraulic storage batteries. Elements of a hydraulic installation on motor vehicles. Pneumatic braking and supporting devices. Pneumatic energy control devices, distributors, pressure valves, circulating valves. Pneumatic control, characteristics and modes. Design of pneumatic control systems - drawing pneumatic schemes. Maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, basic risk and failure factors, basic principles of fault finding and repair.
The student will gain basic knowledge in hydraulics and pneumatics - practical work at exercises will let the student acquire knowledge of producing energy hydraulic calculations and ability of reading and understanding the hydraulic schemes. The student will have the knowledge and ability to determine the defects and their elimination on hydraulic and pneumatic components, and will be able to design and organise the system of maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic devices and components on motor vehicles.
Having passed the exam, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the features of hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies on motor vehicles and construction machinery. 2. Draw hydraulic and pneumatic schemes of new and existing systems and devices. 3. Use hydraulic and pneumatic schemes in the recognition of managing and regulating functions. 4. Calculate the basic physical values and parameters in hydraulics - pressure and flow, forces and moments of executive elements, and the required power of a driving aggregate. 5. Individually select basic components of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and elements of a hydraulic installation. 6. Analyse the problems of failures and their elimination on hydraulic and pneumatic devices and systems. 7. Apply the acquired knowledge in designing hydraulic and pneumatic systems of control on motor vehicles and construction machinery. 8. Know how to plan preventive measures, preventive and corrective maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and devices on motor vehicles and construction machinery. These learning outcomes contribute to the following outcomes of the study programme: - Explain the physical parameters of motor vehicle construction. - Explain the working principle for the assemblies and devices in motor vehicles. - Recognise the need for lifelong learning and using broader literature in motor vehicle maintenance.
