Course Objective: Gaining basic knowledge of electrostatics, electric circuits of direct current, electric and magnetic fields, three-phase system of alternating voltage and basic measurements of voltage, current and resistance.

Course Contents: Historical concepts of electricity. Introduction into electrostatics. Structure of substances. Forces between charges. Coulomb’s law, electric field. Work in an electric field. Electric potential and voltage. Electromotive force, sources of direct voltage. Voltmeter and measuring voltage. Direct electric current. Ammeter and measuring current. Ohm’s law, simple electric circuit. Resistor connections. Kirchhoff’s laws. Solving linear resistance networks. Effects of direct current, energy and power of dirrect current. Measurement errors. Ideal and real instruments. Analog and digital instruments. Errors of measuring instruments and accuracy classes. Homogeneous electric field. Gauss law. Plate condenser capacity. Substance in an electric field. Condenser connections. Historical concepts of magnetism. Induction and intensity of a magnetic field. Materials in the magnetic field. Torus coil, magnetic cycle, inductance. Force in the magnetic field acting on a current-flown conductor, Lorentz force and Lentz law. Working principle of a direct curent motor and alternating current generator. Electromagnetic induction, self-inductance and mutual inductance. Working principle of an ideal transformer. Unconnected and connected system of three-phase symmetric voltage.

General and Specific Competencies (Knowledge and Skills): Physical components of electrical engineering and principles of dealing with mains in the field of direct current. Skills of proper use of measuring instruments, and basic methods of measuring direct voltage, current, power and resistance.
